The Williston Basin is a large sedimentary basin that spans parts of North Dakota, Montana, South Dakota, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
The Bakken and Three Forks Formations are part of the Bakken Petroleum System within the basin, producing over a million barrels of oil per day. This area was instrumental in fueling North Dakota's oil boom and is considered one of the leading unconventional oil sources in the United States. These formations are targeted using horizontal drilling, a technique crucial for extracting the tight, unconventional oil and gas resources.

The Oil and Gas Division regulates the drilling and production of oil and gas in North Dakota . Visit their website to find information about the following:
NDRIN (North Dakota Recorders Information Network) is a group of North Dakota counties that joined together to provide access to real estate records (Mineral Deeds / Assignments of Oil & Gas Lease) via the Internet. These records have previously been available only through books and microfilm in the Recorder's offices in the county courthouses.
The following counties do not participate in NDRI. Their individual sites can be found on the ServND website.
